- SAE (Society of automotive engineers) : ndicates the viscosity of engine oils and multigrade Monograde
- API (American Petroleum Institute) is a standard used since 1923: to choose an oil line with manufacturer recommendations
- ACEA (Association of European Automobile Manufacturers)
The technical definition of lubricant can thus be conducted by two different approaches: from the physical model and its brand name or from other lubricant used (reference manual CEMAGREF)
